Great Things are Happening at Sacred Heart Parish! July, 2010 Update

Wow ~ Sacred Heart Parish has many great things in the works! To keep everyone up to date on various projects we’ll be providing a monthly bulletin insert with details regarding church and school news, current projects and events, recaps of meetings, and much more. If you have questions regarding these "great things" or would like to see updates on something not listed herein, please contact Christy Hakman at c.hakman@sheff.org or 217.347.7177.

40th ANNUAL PICNIC DEEMED A SUCCESS DESPITE THE RAIN

Even after losing nearly four hours of prime picnic time on Sunday evening, the picnic was still very successful. Stay tuned as official numbers will be reported next weekend. We had great traffic during the weekend, and really benefitted from the many new features of this year’s picnic.
The watermelon eating contest drew a large crowd, and the addition of Mexican food was a huge hit! The live auction, in its third year, was the best to date with so many nice items and a tent full of bidders! We served up chicken & ham to a packed house on Sunday as well.

Congratulations to Justin and Jennifer Colnar, the winners of our picnic raffle. The Colnars are members of Sacred Heart Parish, and they had their choice of $15,000 cash, 2010 Chevy Cobalt, or 21’ Campmaster Camper. They selected the cash, and said it will help to pay bills. They’re shown here with their daughter, Sadie, Fr. Spriggs, and Jim Hecht of Dan Hecht Chevrolet.

FRANCISCAN MISSION TRIP RECAP

Two weeks ago, a group of Sacred Heart Parish youth were sent out of Mass with a blessing song, “Take Your Candle and Go Light Your World.”  Those 10 young people returned home last weekend from an exhausting but rewarding mission trip to Cincinnati, OH (the 3rd poorest city in the US), and believe it or not they are ready to go back. They worked in 95 degree heat cutting a brush row out to build houses for the poor, made 400 sandwiches to hand out to the homeless, worked in an inner-city day care center, and slept in an old convent without air-conditioning. They worked with people of different cultures, values, religions and morals – and they did not waiver.

The group performed and then taught 12 elderly nuns the words and action of “If I were a Butterfly,” met and worked with another group of teens from Miamisburg, OH, and learned first-hand that “the only gospel some people will read is the gospel according to you.”

On behalf of the parish, we thank them for taking a part of Sacred Heart with them as they served Jesus. If you get the chance, please ask the group members about their experiences, and thank them personally. They include: Tyler Semple, Jordan Kocher, Jordyn Hartke, Kourtney Utz, Kelli Utz, Jessica Bowlin, Christy Idleman, Faith Hook, Haley Hahn, and Samantha Zerrusen. Special thanks to chaperones, Barb Carie & Carol Toney. God WILL bless all of them.
