Assumption of the Virgin by El Greco
The Assumption of the Virgin is an oil painting by Greek‐born artist Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, sometime between 1577– 1579. It depicts the assumption of Mary, when her body was "assumed" into heaven to be reunited with her soul, instead of going through the natural process of physical decay upon death. Contrary to Jesus' ascension into Heaven, which He did by His own power, Mary's assumption depended on the power of God. On the painting, the Virgin Mary floats upward which symbolizes her purity, while apostles gathered around her empty tomb express amazement and concern.
