Christ is at the center of everything we do at Sacred Heart School.
"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20)
School-wide Morning Prayer
Each morning our school body gathers together for morning prayer to start the day. Each class takes a turn leading prayer for a month at a time. That class also focuses on a certain virtue for the month, sharing information and lessons about that virtue with the rest of the students. Sometimes they perform a skit or play a game with a special message about the virtue. Or, they might tell a story or sing a song. This prayer time is a special way to kickstart the day with our school family coming together and spending time with God before moving forward with the rest of the day's activities.
Prayer Throughout the Day
Our school environment is a safe place where we talk openly about Jesus, and about Christian morals and values. Students have religion class every day where they learn and grow in their faith. In addition, all secular subjects are taught from a Christian perspective. Teachers often pray with students before tests or anytime they are struggling or having a rough day. Students are encouraged to share their faith with each other. Each class also prays at meal times and snack times. Christ's presence is felt throughout the day.
Classes also pray together at the end of each day, asking for God's protection and blessings as they leave the building and head home.
Mass & Reconciliation
Each class attends Mass once a week. Students in grades 3-8 also go to Reconciliation once a month. Second grade students start after receiving their First Reconciliation.
Sacraments
Beginning in the spring of 2019, all parishes within the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois are restoring the Original Order of the Sacraments of Initiation. Therefore, Confirmation and Eucharist are received together, both during third grade. Our third grade students prepare for these sacraments during their daily religion class.
